Winter is on its way, and it promises to offer residents of Salem, Oregon, with plenty of chilly days. If you wish to keep the temperature in your home as warm as you find comfortable this winter without breaking the bank, you may want to consider having a new heat pump installed. If you would like to find out more about this process, which could make your heating system twice as efficient as it currently is, continue reading this article.
Select Your Heat Pump
Before your home’s new heat pump is installed, you need to choose a make and model. The location of your home’s property, its access to high-quality water, and your own personal preferences are three factors that are likely to play into your decision to install a ground-source heat pump over another types or vice versa. A heat pump installation professional can help you determine what types of heat pump make the most sense for your property by conducting a site evaluation.
Schedule an Installation Appointment
The installation of most heat pumps should not be attempted independent of an HVAC professional with extensive heat pump installation experience. Schedule an appointment with a professional, and make sure that you secure any permits necessary in your neighborhood in order to carry out the digging and burying involved in the process of installing your heat pump.
Enjoy the Benefits Your New Heat Pump Provides
Once your heat pump has been installed, the last step is for you and your family to enjoy the benefits. If the heat pump is new, well-engineered, and properly installed, these will likely include increased at-home comfort and lower energy bills.

Unless you’ve spent a few afternoons researching the ins and outs of your HVAC system, chances are you’re unfamiliar with the ratings used for its various components. From air conditioner energy-efficiency to the effectiveness of your heat pump, it’s important to learn how your hard-working appliances are rated. Here is an overview of the ratings associated with air conditioners, filters, and heat pumps:
-
SEER: Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, or SEER, is a rating system used to measure the efficiency of your air conditioner and other cooling appliances. A higher SEER number means your appliance will cost less to operate, as it will be more energy-efficient. The Department of Energy recommends that consumers view a rating level of 13.00 as the minimum SEER number.
-
HSPF: Like the SEER rating, the HSPF, or Heating Seasonal Performance Factor, measures the efficiency of an appliance. In this case, the HSPF rates the efficiency of a heat pump’s actual heating portion, which includes a compressor and other electric-resistant parts. The most efficient heat pumps fall between an HSPF between eight and ten.
-
MERV: The MERV, or Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, is a ranking used by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers. It measures the size of the holes in a filter that allow air to pass through, with a higher rating signifying smaller holes. Small holes within the filter allow less debris to enter the system and therefore increase its efficiency. The highest filters will reach a rating of 16.
